Adoption Policies

Adoption Policies

  • MLRR does not adopt dogs to homes seeking an "outside-only" dog. All adopted dogs must live and sleep inside the home and may not be left outside unsupervised.
  • Dogs adopted through MLRR may never be off-leash in an unfenced area. No exceptions.
  • Electric or invisible fencing is not permitted as a method of containment. While a fenced yard is not required, adopters must provide a safe containment solution that complies with MLRR's leash and training policies.
  • Tie-outs (ropes or chains attached to a stake or fixed object) are not considered acceptable containment.
  • Dogs may not be adopted as gifts or surprises. MLRR works directly with the adoption applicant only.
  • All adopters must enroll their dog in a force-free, positive reinforcement training program:
    • Puppies under 5 months: Puppy socialization class followed by a basic manners class or private training.
    • Dogs over 5 months: Basic manners class or private training.
  • Adopters must use force-free, positive training methods throughout the dog's lifetime. Techniques based on fear, intimidation, pain, dominance, or punishment are strictly prohibited, including:
    • Shock collars
    • Prong collars
    • Choke chains
    • Electric or invisible fencing
    • Hitting, kicking, leash jerking, alpha rolls, or similar methods
  • Adopters must be willing to crate train when appropriate. Crates help with safety, house training, and management.
  • Adopters must maintain routine veterinary care, including:
    • Vaccinations as recommended by their veterinarian
    • Annual heartworm testing
    • Year-round heartworm prevention prescribed by a veterinarian
  • Current and previous dogs owned by the applicant must have received annual heartworm testing and prescription prevention.
  • All resident dogs must be spayed or neutered unless a veterinarian has documented a medical reason not to alter.
  • If resident cats are present, proof of rabies vaccination is required.
  • If the adopted dog has not been altered prior to adoption, the adopter must comply with the spay/neuter requirements outlined in the adoption agreement.
  • For unmarried couples or roommates, the adoption contract may be completed in only one person's name.
  • All household members, including resident dogs, must be present during the home visit and meet-and-greet process.
  • Applicants living in rental properties, apartments, condominiums, or townhomes must provide written approval from the landlord or homeowners association allowing a Labrador-sized dog.
  • Applicants are responsible for complying with all local pet ownership ordinances and limits.
  • MLRR may contact veterinarians and personal references listed on the application. Family members may not be used as references.
  • Approved applications remain active for two years. After that time, applicants must reapply.
  • Applicants who wish to adopt a second MLRR dog may be required to complete an updated home visit, reference check, veterinary check, proof of training, and board review.
  • Applicants with a history of surrendering dogs to shelters, rescues, family members, or returning an MLRR dog may be considered only with board approval on a case-by-case basis.
  • If requesting that MLRR take back an adopted dog, adopters must demonstrate that reasonable efforts were made first, including veterinary evaluation and professional training support.

MLRR reserves the right to contact references, verify veterinary records, revoke adoption approval status, refuse any adoption application, and modify these policies at any time.
