Adoption Day Checklist

Adoption day is exciting! Before your foster dog leaves for their new home, please make sure medications, prevention, food, and MLRR supplies are handled correctly.

Food

Please send only a small Ziploc-style bag of the dog's current food.

The purpose of the food is to give the adopter enough to gradually transition the dog to the food they plan to feed.

Label the bag with the brand and variety of food when possible.
Do not send a full bag of MLRR food home with the adopter unless specifically authorized.

Medications

All current medications prescribed specifically to the dog should go home with the dog.

Make sure the adopter knows:

☐ Medication name
☐ Dose
☐ How often it is given
☐ When the next dose is due
☐ Whether the medication needs to be finished

Heartworm, Flea & Tick Prevention

Any prevention specifically assigned to that dog should go home with the dog.

Tell the adopter when the next dose is due.
Do not keep a dog's assigned prevention for another foster dog.

MLRR Supplies

MLRR supplies should not automatically be sent home with an adopter.

If you are unsure, ask before giving away:

Full bags of food
Crates
Exercise pens
Bowls
Extra leashes
Bulk medications or preventatives
Other MLRR-owned supplies

Before Your Foster Leaves

☐ Small food transition bag packed

☐ All current medications packed

☐ Assigned prevention packed

☐ Medication schedule reviewed with adopter

☐ Prevention schedule reviewed with adopter

☐ Important medical information reviewed

☐ Important behavioral information reviewed

☐ Appropriate dog-specific belongings packed

☐ MLRR supplies retained unless specifically authorized

☐ Foster Coordinator notified of anything requiring follow-up
